TORONTO - The Western Field Hockey team travelled to Toronto Sunday afternoon to face long time rivals, Queen's University. After a hard game, Western fell 1-0 to the Gaels.
In the first half, both teams kept even possession of the ball gravely trying to outplay each other. As Western pressured Queen's players, they managed to keep calm utilizing their forward and midfield line.
The Gaels finally capitalized on the opportunity to score after numerous breakaways and chances on net by both teams. Just nine minutes into the game, Gaels' Caitlin Gordon managed to flick the ball just past Mustang's goalkeeper
Marielle Fernback to score the only goal of the game.
The final half of the game showed similar virtues as the first. As both teams scrambled to get points, they failed to outperform each other, making an even game. After a scoreless 30 minutes, Queen's finished the game victorious over Western 1-0.
Western now resides in sixth place of OUA standings. As a result of this lost, the Mustangs have been eliminated from playoff contention.
The Stangs will prepare for their final week of the season next weekend at Queen's University. The purple and white will have a rematch Saturday afternoon against rivals Queen's University at 12:30pm followed by a 4 p.m. match against University of Toronto. Western will then cap off their season with a game against McGill at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
