KINGSTON, Ont. - The Western field hockey team rounded out their 2015 season with a disappointing 1-10 record this past weekend. With three-straight losses to Queen's, University of Toronto, and McGill, the Mustangs have now failed to earn a spot in the OUA playoff weekend two-years running.
The purple and white put up a strong fight Saturday afternoon against the Queen's Gaels despite being blanked 3-0. The Mustangs battled through a physical game to demonstrate why the Queen's-Western rivalry is so strong. The play went back-and-forth throughout the first half, with both teams receiving probable scoring opportunities.
The scoreboard remained blank until the final minutes of the half when Queen's Ciara Morrison tipped the ball past Western's goalkeeper
Margaret Yu to give themselves a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The Mustangs regrouped and heightened their intensity for the second-half, but could not find their way onto the scoreboard. The game's grittiness was demsontrated by pentalities for first-year
Nakisha Slavin with a green card as well as veteran
Leah Burke and Queen's Annabel Irwin's paired yellow cards for aggressive play. The Gaels went on to add two more goals to their lead, finalizing the score at 3-0.
Western took on University of Toronto later that afternoon and struggled to halt their momentum with a devastating 12-2 loss. Regardless of taking on Toronto, the Queen's homecoming crowd not-so-shockingly rallied against the purple and white. Nonetheless, the Varsity Blues were the first to contribute to the scoreboard, blanking the Mustangs 6-0 in the first half. However, Western kept battling and proudly found the back of the net on two occasions.
Third-year veteran
Emily Cozens led the charge, earning an unassisted goal just moments into the second-half. This gave the purple and white momentum and constituted a much more competetive half. New Zealand native
Selen Soylemezoglu followed up with a second goal for the Mustangs, demonstrating the fight still left in the team.
Sunday presented a very damaging game as the Mustangs were plagued with injuries. The McGill Martlets went onto blanked the purple and white 3-0. Once again, Western received unfavourable cheers from the Queen's crowd.
The first half of the game presented many fouls and cards as McGill's Noa Roque and Breeshey Roskams-Hieter were penalized. The Mustangs, however, were unable to benefit from the man-advantages as they could not get the ball past McGill's goalkeeper. Action went back-and-forth throughout the half, but it was the Martlet's Midori Huguenin who opened the scoring with just moments to go in the first half. Unfortunately the Mustangs could not recover and faced a 3-0 loss despite the various short-corner opportunites awarded at the end of the game.
The Mustangs would like to thank all their friends and family for the continuous support on and off the field. The team will take the next few weeks to recover and then they will start their off-season training in preparation for the 2016 OUA season. With just veteran
Leah Burke being the only graduating player, the Mustangs expect better results this upcoming season as the team will be seasoned and hungry for revenge.
