Mustangs lose to Lions and Varsity Blues at TD Stadium

LONDON, Ont. – The Mustangs fell short on Saturday in their host week of the OUA season at TD Stadium, playing a double header against York University and University of Toronto, losing both games. In the first match of the day, the purple and white were out for revenge against the York Lions, but lost 1-0 due to a late goal from Michelle Per. The first half started off with a lot of ball movement, as Western controlled the game. Their determination to win was evident, but the Mustangs could not find the back of the net.

In true Western fashion, the Mustangs did not give up and fought hard as they pressured the Lions. Although York had many circle entries in the second half, the Mustangs remained calm and were able to clear the ball out and up to the forwards. Goalkeeper Marielle Fernback played a great game as she remained composed making multiple saves.

The purple and white's strong defensive game was once again evident on Saturday afternoon as they faced off against University of Toronto. Despite the loss, the Mustangs were able to keep the game within reach with a final score of 3-1 versus the reigning OUA Champions.

The Varsity Blues pressured the Mustang's defence early in the game using ball speed to their advantage. The score remained blank until the 23rd minute, which Allison Lee scored on a stroke. The Mustangs were unable to respond with a goal in the first half, but fought hard in the second.

Toronto's Emma Stairs scored their second goal quickly after halftime. However, the Mustangs responded within minutes with an offensive attack allowing second year Sabrina Bradshaw to find the back of the net with an assist from Constance A. Francis.

The remainder of the half was a back and forth battle through the cold rain and wind. The Mustangs warded the Varsity Blues off of various attempt in the circle and defended multiple short corners with ease. In the final minutes of the game, Toronto's Nicole Godman received a pass and quickly sweeped the ball past Fernback to end the game at 3-1.

The field hockey team has a busy week before Thanksgiving as they will travel to Guelph Wednesday night for a game under the lights at 7:30 p.m. followed by a game in Waterloo on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
