GUELPH, Ont. - The Western Mustang's field hockey team set the tone early this past weekend with strong offensive action in a double-header against the York Lions and McGill Martlets. Despite dropping their first game 3-1, the Mustangs battled hard and continued with their momentum to earn a 2-0 victory in their next game versus McGill.
Western pressured York right from the first whistle Saturday morning but the first half ended scoreless. Despite their constant pressure and opportunities in the attacking zone, the purple and white found themselves in a 2-0 deficit early in the second half as York's Jade Robertson scored back-to-back goals.
With 15 minutes remaining in the final half, the Mustangs capitalized on an offensive attack. Second-year,
Nicole Willis, put the Mustangs on the scoreboard with support from various teammates. However, the Lions answered with their third and final goal to shut down the Mustangs with a final score of 3-1.
In the second game of the weekend, the purple and white posted a 2-0 victory over the McGill Martlets Sunday afternoon. Hungry to redeem their previous day's loss, the Mustangs showed up ready to hunt down a victory.
Bermudian native,
Alex Constance Francis opened the scoring for the Mustangs partway through the first-half with aggressive play around the net, assisted by
Leah Burke. The Mustangs then began the second half of the game with a 2-0 lead as
Katie Newton swept the ball past the Lions goalkeeper.
Next up for the Mustangs is a home game at TD Stadium, facing the Guelph Gryphons, Tuesday September 22 at 7pm. Come out and support the purple and white as they seek another victory.
