The Mustangs will be looking to continue rolling through their opponents as they return from the Winter break at 7-2, good enough for second in OUA West.
The first test of the New Year will come from Waterloo, as the Warriors are scheduled to take on the Mustangs in purple and white territory on January 16.
With only two losses on the board from Queen's and McMaster, Western has proven to be one of the OUA's most elite competitors. The Mustang corps has proven to be equally as strong offensively and defensively, though the most challenging part of their game continues to come from the block.
Kelsey Veltman and
Aja Gyimah continue to dominate as the leading defenders at the net, as well as leading the Mustang offense to each post an even 4.0 points per set.
Katherine Tsiofas, leading the OUA in assists and the team in service aces, continues to be integral to every part of the Mustang game. Providing a solid base pass for Tsiofas is often Courtney Sestic as the former OUA All-Rookie continues to lead the team in digs per set.
Sestric, along with
Serena Smith, who is the second most reliable passer on the team, will be integral in combating the strong serving of the Warriors on Saturday. With 82 service aces, the Warriors lead the OUA.
Despite holding a negative 4-6 record, the Warriors have proven that they're able to face tough competitors head on. While the previous matchup was marked down as a win for Western, the Warriors were able to take the second set by seven points. Â
Unforced errors seem to be the biggest issue on the Waterloo end of court as the team ranks first in the OUA in both attack and service errors. As expected, the most successful matches for Waterloo have been those in which they were able to keep the ball in play and cut down on the number of points they hand delivered to the opposition.
Rookie Alyson Colpitts has been the greatest offensive weapon in the Warrior arsenal, seeing action in all ten matches to average 3.4 points per set. Claire McKenzie, a second year outside, comes in behind with 2.7 points per set.
Colpitts and Mackenzie are also part of the trio leading Waterloo from the baseline. Mckenzie and Emily Ibbotson have each put up 11 service aces, while Colpitts comes in with 15.
Saturday's match is expected to begin at 1pm, with live streaming available for long distance fans at
