Former Mustang badminton player Martin Giuffre is set to compete on the biggest stage, as he's been selected to represent Canada next month at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Giuffre will be making his Olympic debut in Rio, although he's no stranger to high-level international competition, winning the 2008 Pan American Junior Championship and helping Canada to gold at the 2014 Pan American Team Championships as well as competing in the 2015 World Championship and the 2013 Summer Universiade.
Along with his success playing for Canada, Giuffre excelled at the university level, winning both the OUA men's singles title and OUA men's MVP award in each of his five seasons as a Mustang. He also helped the Mustangs win three OUA Championships during his tenure.
Giuffre's selection marks the second consecutive Olympics that a former Mustang will represent Canada on the badminton court after Alex Bruce came fourth in women's doubles alongside Michelle Li. Li, who previously suited up for the University of Toronto, was also named to Team Canada and will be competing in Rio next month.
