London, ON – The Mustangs' energetic performance earned them an impressive 3-0 victory over Brock Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
"Any time you get a win against a west division opponent is big: it swings the standings" head coach Melissa Bartlett said. "Brock has been pushing very good teams so coming away with a 3-0 win is very impressive."
Bartlett and Kristina Curcin attributed the team's success to effective execution of practiced game plan and learned improvements from their previous struggle against the Gaels.
"Last week we missed a lot of serves" Curcin said. "This week we focused on serving and blocking in middles in practice. We really implemented what was done in practice."
Among a strong offensive performance from the whole team, Kelsey Veltman, recently recognized at the women's volleyball awards, earned several kills. Melissa Langegger also proved very reliable, performing an offensive match very well.
The first set saw a lively rally between teams, beginning with an effective kill by the Badgers and several successive kills by the Mustangs. The badgers came back with opposing some reception errors, but the Mustangs soon pulled ahead winning the round.
The second set saw a more energetic effort by the Mustang's offense. The Badgers began with a strong offensive effort which was quickly retaliated by some excellent serves by Carly Kimmett. The teams remain almost tied in the first half of the set. Several effective blocks by the Mustang offense kept the ball in the game and the Mustangs ahead.
Several extensive rallies followed with the Mustangs earning several points from attack errors from the Badgers. The team roared with enthusiasm as the Mustangs pulled ahead with several successive blocks and attacks. The Badgers earned one more attack before the Mustangs claimed the set.
The Mustangs entered the third set with confidence. They pulled ahead of the Badgers quickly despite their several effective defensive plays. The Badgers pulled ahead once again to tie the set several times before several effective attacks allowed the Mustangs to pull substantially ahead. Technical difficulties and reception errors by the Badgers earned the Mustangs a few points. The Mustangs earned several consecutive points to claim victory in their final set.
"It's really exciting to win 3 sets especially after the struggle last game" Curcin said. "Now we're really excited for next weekend."
The Mustangs will travel to Guelph to face off the Gryphons next Saturday November 10
