Box Score WATERLOO, Ont.- The Western Mustangs improved to 4-0 and remain the lone undefeated team in the OUA following a 67-7 drubbing of the Waterloo Warriors in a game that featured career high performances for a pair of Mustangs receivers.
Cole Majoros and Brett Ellerman each scored three touchdowns while QB Chris Merchant threw those six TD passes for 348 yards in total as the Mustangs quickly spoiled Reunion Day at Waterloo for the assembled Warrior faithful.
"We scored within the first few plays of the game and that can be difficult for teams to bounce back from," said Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall. "Offensively we made the most of our opportunities. I told our team that these guys can score in bunches like they did against Laurier. Our coaches did a good job of substituting and defending a good quarterback"
Marc Legghio opened the scoring with field goal just before the Mustangs added to their lead on a 26-yard action pass from Merchant to Brett Ellerman, his first of three majors in the game. RB Cedric Joseph then ran in his sixth major of the season from two yards out to make the score 17-0 before the game was eight minutes old.
Waterloo was coming off an upset win over their cross-town rivals from Laurier largely on the strength of their highly-touted quarterback Tre Ford. He was 8 for 16 in the passing department on the afternoon with one touchdown and one interception. Ford's high caliber abilities were evident, but he struggled to get into a groove against an energized Mustangs defensive corps. Ultimately he engineered but one TD pass on a pretty toss to his favourite receiver Tyler Ternowski. That score made it 17-7. Western would go onto score 50 unanswered points and put the game out of reach before the end of the first half.
The Mustangs played one of their strongest defensive games of the season to date against one of the country's leading quarterbacks. "We did a great job of controlling Ford in the pocket and limit the damage he was going to do," said defensive coordinator Paul Gleason. "We tried to give him as many different looks and confuse him as much as possible and that worked well."
Merchant connected with Mojoros on a 31-yard TD pass and to Ellerman who made a skillful adjustment to record a 19-yard TD catch and put Western up 31-7 at the end of the first quarter. Majoros later broke 61-yard pass and run play to vault the Mustangs ahead 40-7. Both Majoros and Ellerman would each add a touchdown reception in the second half to solidify their respective career-high, single-game efforts. Marc Legghio had two field goals and the defense contributed with two safeties. QB Kevin John scored a touchdown on a QB sneak late in the fourth quarter to cap the score at 67-7.
Next up the Mustangs travel to Richardson Stadium in Kingston to face the Queens Gaels Saturday at 1pm.
