Mustangs give way to Marauders in final game of the regular season

9/29/2019 2:13:00 PM

LONDON, Ont. – The Mustangs' women's rugby team fell to the McMaster Marauders 96-0 Sunday afternoon in their fourth and final game of the OUA regular season. The win will bring the Marauders to 2-2 in their regular season record and the Mustangs to 0-4.

The Marauders established their determination early in the game with their first try landing less than 2 minutes in. Prop Stacey Warner rushed the try-zone to touch it down, followed shortly thereafter by another from 8-woman Katie McLeod. The remainder of McMaster's tries were split amongst their forwards and backs, with seven converts made by fly-half Tia Svoboda.

While the score climbed steadily for the duration of the game, the Mustangs did have their highlights. Their lineouts proved to be impressive with several steals of possession and quick offloads to their scrum-half Sarah Thompson. Flanker Jade Farhat established herself as the Mustang workhorse of the week with her impressive tackles, "setting the tone" for the remainder of the team. When asked who else really shined on the pitch, Head Coach Katie Baer also called out fullback Selena Hough for being a saviour – someone who consistently made her tackles in every instance of a line-break.

As the women look forward to their first playoff game of the season, Baer is candid with her enthusiasm. "Our season is shifting into playoffs – this is essentially an opportunity for a second season. The girls have changed their mentality and aggressiveness in both tackles and gameplay. How they've been gelling as a team is exactly what we've been looking for… This is a great base to build off going forward."

The Mustangs will return to the pitch for their first game of the playoff season on Saturday, October 5th on Alumni field. Their opposition is TBA. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 P.M EST.
