LONDON, ON – The Western Mustangs women's rugby team had a 36-13 win over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
"Discipline wise, we were where we wanted to be." said Head coach Campbell after the game, "A couple calls went against us, but I thought the girls did a really good job of resetting their mindset and getting onto the next job."
The game opened with both teams battling for possession in the midfield through the first 10 minutes. Western broke the deadlock at the 19-minute mark when #11 Katria Wright scored the first try of the day, followed by a successful conversion from #13 Mika Hough to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
Shortly after, #15 Tashlyn Jackson broke free on a long run, scoring Western's second try to make it 14-0. McMaster responded with a penalty kick to get on the board, but Western quickly added back-to-back tries both from #14 Reilly Cattell extending the halftime lead to 26-3.
In the second half, Western continued its offence with a try from #20 Hannah Fern, moving the score to 31-3. McMaster countered with a try of their own, but the Mustangs answered when #11 Wright scored her second of the afternoon, pushing the lead to 36-8. The Marauders added one more try in the final minute, but Western's defense held strong to secure the 36-13 victory.
The win continues Western's strong start to the season with 4 wins, as the team fights for the top position on the OUA ranking.
