Toronto, ON - Mustangs fourth year long distance running sensation Kate Current topped the OUA season by picking up a pair of gold medals at the 2020 OUA Championship in Toronto.
Current started the two day event by winning the women's 3000m gold medal with a final time of 9:32.55, She won by almost 4 seconds. The Mustangs also won four other medals on day one, Marcel Scheele also won gold in the 3000m on the men's side, Western also won bronze in the 4x800m relay. On the women's side the Mustangs took home a pair of silver medals, Ayasha Horner in the Women's Indoor Pentathlon & Emily Good in Shot Put.
Day two brought more hardware for Western as Rachel Campbel won gold and Natasha Gubbels won bronze in the Weight Throw. Current added a gold medal in the women's 1500m with a final time of 4:26.44 & Paige Doyle won silver in the Triple Jump with a top distance of 11.92m. The men's team rocketed up the team standings on day two thanks to four medal performances of their own, Jared Hendricks-Polack & Shawn Beaudoin won silver and bronze respectively in the Heptathalon while Isaiah Frielink won a bronze medal in 1500m and the men's 4x200m relay team also took third place in their event.
Both of the Mustangs teams finished 2nd overall in the team scoring in the event as Western trailed the champions from Guelph.
Western now turns its attention to the upcoming U SPORTS National Championship at the University of Alberta on March 5-7, 2020.
