Western shuts out Waterloo in impressive 43-0 victory

LONDON, ON – The Mustangs sent the Warriors back to Waterloo unable to score, bringing Western a 43-0 victory this weekend.

As the sun set on Alumni Field on Saturday evening, the Mustangs began a high-intensity game against the Waterloo Warriors.

Western opened the game's scoring off two penalty shots, bringing the score up to 6-0 for the Mustangs, as they were able to hold a firm line, making it difficult for Waterloo to gain much ground toward their try line.

There were multiple chances where Western was close to scoring a try, but Waterloo managed to push them away pretty consistently in the first half.

The Mustangs were powering their way through the Warriors' defense, and because of such powerful pressure on both offense and defense, the first try of the game was scored by Western on the final play of the first half, bringing the score to 11-0 at the end of the first 40 minutes of the game.

"It was a little scary at first, and then just all had our nerves going, but halftime especially really helped," said Mustangs Captain Cailin McKay, "we knew we needed to get more depth and release the pressure from their defense, and once we execute it works perfectly," she said.

As the second half of the game began, the Mustangs and Warriors came out the gates with even more intensity than before. Several Mustang players made impressive dashes halfway down the field, causing Waterloo players to scramble after them.

Only five minutes into the second half of play, this dominant Mustangs team scored a try, lifting the score to 16-0 in Western's favor. "For our girl's rugby is fun, and if it's fun, then you want to keep playing right to the 80th minute, and I think they showed that today," said Western's Head Coach Josh Campbell.

This Mustang team did not give Waterloo any space at all, giving the game their absolute all for the entire final 40, making the most of every opportunity, and fighting right the way through the opposition. "We pride ourselves on our work rate, which the ladies showed throughout the game working very hard on and off the ball," Campbell continued.

Fifteen minutes into this second half, Western scored another set of points, followed by another try on the next play, bringing the score to 28-0, with a still scoreless Waterloo.

After fighting intensely through Waterloo's consistently tight defense, Western earned another try a little over 30 minutes into this half (33-0). "It takes a lot of mental preparation like for skills… just getting in the right headspace mentality to produce on the spot in a game even when you're tired," said Mustang player Jenna Lawrence.

There was lots of back-and-forth between the teams, with Waterloo fighting hard to try and stop the Mustangs from building on their already significant lead, resulting in the intensity being high throughout the rest of the match.

Western was not giving the Warriors even an inch of extra space on defense. They would not stop putting their all to get through the Waterloo defense to score several more times, which they did with just minutes remaining in the game, right up to the game's final play, with the final score reading 43-0 in Western's favor.

The next and final regular season home game for the Mustangs will be Friday, October 07, at 7 pm on Alumni Field.
