London, ON - The Mustangs Women's Golf team continued a stellar 2022 season on Monday afternoon as they won the gold medal & took the individual win at the Gryphons Invitational at the Guelph Lakes Golf & Country Club.
The Mustangs finished with a team total of 246 from the combined team of Lexie McKay, Madison Telford, Ciara Tully-Cormick and Isabelle Funk.
"It was my first time playing the course but it really suited my game as it was designed to make you think strategically with tee shots and approaches to the green." said McKay "I started the day off with a birdie and I felt really good after coming off a win the day before so I just tried to stay as focused as I could and play the best I could.
McKay picked up her fourth individual gold medal on the season on Monday, shooting a 1 under par 70 to win the event by 8 strokes. Telford finished 6th in individual standings shooting an 85 while Tully-Cormick shot a 91 & Funk shot 112.
The win at Guelph comes on the heels of another individual gold medal finish for McKay at the Waterloo Women's Invitational over the weekend where she finished finished with a 1 stroke win after a two round score of 155.
"Waterloo was a long and tough event, the lowest score of the week was +4 so everyone battled through the course. The greens were really tough and the high winds on Sunday added to the challenge. Our coach Charles (Fitzsimmons) reminded me that I don't have to play perfectly to win and I could still get it done by trying to minimize the mistakes and that's what I did." said McKay
The Men's team finished in 5th place at the Guelph event with a team total of 298. Luca Ferrera led the Mustangs shooting 70 on the day, which was good for a tie for 2nd place individually. William Hebert & Conall Mullarkey each shot a 75 on the day while Griffin Nogas fired a 78 and Riley Mathieson finished with an 81.
The OUA Championship is set for Oct. 14-16 at Hylands Golf Club in Ottawa.
"It felt really good to gain another team win as it's pretty hard to have everyone play well on the same day and pull it off. This is our last event before the OUA's so it feels great to be riding on a high into the championships." said McKay
