London, ON – Lexie McKay finished out a grueling week of golf in 4th place individually as the Mustangs Women's Golf team competed at the 2023 Canadian University/College Championship last week.

The 2nd year Kinesiology student from Aurora, ON shot a final round 73 to finish the four-round event, in what was a very hot week at Firerock Golf Club in Komoka.

"I'm very proud of my finish and to represent Ontario in the top 5 as well." said McKay "It was a hard week with lots of up and downs but to come out of it in solo fourth is a great way to leave. I can't thank Charles (Fitzsimmons, Head Coach) enough for being by my side in the final round!"

McKay finished +8 for the tournament and recalled a very trying situation ahead of her third round of play.

"The morning of the third round I was feeling great as I was in solo second and knew I could make a move closer to the leader. I then found myself in my kitchen making breakfast when suddenly the knife I was using slipped and essentially sliced my thumb. With three hours to my tee time I had no idea what to do, or if I could even play." said McKay "Thankfully with the help of Charles, Fowler Kennedy was able to squeeze me in and close up the wound in time. As I was warming up, I found that I couldn't hold the club normally so I had to adjust a few things in my swing to figure out how to hit it. The first few holes were essentially calibrating my swing but I finally found something and was able to finish the round."

Only the top 25 individual golfers made the final round of play in this format and the top 6 teams. Only McKay played in the 4th round and the Mustangs finished just outside the cut in 7th position.

Rylie Grogan (2022 OUA Individual Champion) finished +36 over her three rounds of play, Ciara Cornic finished +38 & Madison Telford was +62.

The team now shifts their focus to the fall season in a few months and is feeling confident coming off the week at the national championship.

"We finished highest for the OUA teams so I think that will give us a lot of confidence going into the fall and hopefully we can ride that momentum into some more wins in the regular season," said McKay.
