LONDON, ON – Wrapping up their regular season at home, the Western Mustangs put on a dominant display shutting out the Toronto Varsity Blues for a 58-0 victory.
The Mustangs were an overwhelming force from the start, holding tough and consistent pressure on the Varsity Blues, and remaining quick on the tackle.
Despite only having two alternate players, Toronto didn't fall back, they pushed back against the Mustangs throughout the first half making Western fight hard drive down the field.
Although they faced strong pushback from the Varsity Blues, and had the ball held-up twice in as many attempts, the third time was the charm for the Mustangs, as Hannah Fern charged through the Toronto defense to score the first try of the game.
As the game resumed, Western was hungry to score again, remaining quick to pull down their opponent, and protect the ball. This fight and ability to make use of the open player allowed the Mustangs to advance quickly toward the try-line once again.
Cailyn McKay brought Western their next score, powering down the field through open space to further the Mustangs lead shorty after the 22
nd minute. After a successful conversion the score increased to 12-0.
"Everything we've been working for this season, and exactly how we want too run - I think we did that today and it's really come together," said McKay, "we need to emphasize... we just need to make sure we keep our work rate up, every single play, every single time, till the last minute," she continuted.
Western proceeded to take a commanding lead after fighting past the defence of the tiring Toronto team, and with the rain beginning to fall, the Mustangs slipped through the opposing line, with Cassie Osatchuk and McKay both putting the ball down past the goal line advancing the score to a 32-0 lead for the home team to end the half.
The rain held off to begin the second half, and in the opening minutes Western commanded the play and drove through for yet another try, this time coming from Taylor Hagen extending the lead.
Only a few minutes later, Reilly Cattel powered through the defenders with a impressive 60-metre run down the pitch to score the Mustangs' 7
th try of the afternoon going up 44-0.
The Varsity Blues continued to put up a fight, putting their all into their defence but it just isn't enough to hold off the Mustangs, with Mika Hough putting down another try for the team, extending their lead to 48-0.
Fighting through the cold the Mustangs remained relentless in their offensive pressure, while Toronto used all their weight to try pull down their opponents, holding up several tries, it was no use as Western furthered their lead to 53-0 as the sun came out for the final minutes of the match.
The Varsity Blues began a valiant charge down the field before the Mustangs re-gained possession to push them back to the mid-line of the pitch.
"Maintaining the momentum we've built over the last couple of games is very important," said Mustangs' Head Coach, Josh Campbell, "we can be our own worst enemy sometimes, but when we play to our potential we are very, very hard to beat."
In the final minutes of the game, following increased pressure from the opponent, Solene Coutts scored her first try of the match sealing the Mustangs' lead at 58-0 to wrap up their regular season.
