LONDON, ON - The Mustangs charged to a 60-0 victory against the Laurier Golden Hawks in a commanding display of skill and power on Friday afternoon.
From the first whistle, it was evident that the Mustangs were determined to secure a decisive win. The match's opening moments saw both teams coming out strong, with the Mustangs and Laurier appearing equally matched.Â
Laurier wasted no time attempting to charge through, but the Mustangs made their presence known defensively. Western's first possession of the match was crucial, as they picked up a loose ball in center field and began a relentless charge toward the goal line.Â
Laurier's defense put up a fight, producing powerful tackles, but the Mustangs powered through, showcasing their determination.
The pivotal moment came just under four minutes into the game when Mustangs' Cailyn McKay found an open lane and sprinted down the field. A play that was closely followed by a try from Gala Holm, securing the first score of the match.Â
Western's consistent pressure, impressive takedowns, and dominance in the scrum throughout the first half pushed the Golden Hawks further back down the field. The Mustangs' defense remained rock-solid, forcing Laurier to play along the boundaries.
"Our defence was probably our biggest strength out there, regardless of what the scoreline was," said Mustangs Head Coach Josh Campbell.Â
Despite Laurier's respectable efforts, the Mustangs continued to assert their authority. Mikaela Hough powered through the Golden Hawks to score another try, advancing the Mustangs' lead to 12-0.Â
The onslaught continued as Lizzie Schori charged through the opposition, putting the game's third try on the board and bringing the score to 19-0.
Western's organization was evident throughout the match, showcasing notable improvement from the previous week. The Mustangs effectively found open slots, charging through Laurier's defense with precision and consistency.
"The name of the game is consistency," said Campbell, "we know that when we are playing at our best, we are very very hard to beat... finding that consistency is key," he continued.Â
Laurier, however, demonstrated resilience with powerful takedowns near the try line, temporarily holding the Mustangs at bay and gaining possession.
Western's Amy Wynne then delivered a remarkable play, surging through the Laurier defensive line, further extending the Mustangs' dominant lead to 24-0 as the first half ended.Â
The second half of the game saw the Mustangs continuing their relentless attack. Katie Salverda initiated a powerful drive toward the try line, setting the stage for Hough to drive it over for yet another try, extending Western's lead and scoring her second of the match.
While Laurier displayed a stronger defensive effort in the second half, they were no match for the Mustangs' offense.Â
Western continued to dominate, as another try was scored, and the score rose again, reading 36-0.Â
A remarkable 40-meter maul paved the way for yet another try. Hough crossed the try line and pushed the score to 50-0 in favor of the Mustangs as she collected a hattrick.
"Everyone really gave it their all, gave it 110%," said Hough, the team's leading scorer of the match, "we had some really great defence... [the team] really allowed me to get those opportunities."Â
Another try extended their lead again, with nine tries so far throughout the match.
The final charge came from Lauren Male, who added one more try to the tally, bringing the final score to a dominating 60-0.Â
An impressive display of resilience and determination from this Mustangs team, collecting their third win of the season as they move on to their final matches of the year.Â
Western will play their next game away against the Guelph Gryphons on October 1 before returning home to close the regular season against the Toronto Varsity Blues on October 7 at 3 p.m.Â
