Hamilton, ON - The Mustangs Women's Rugby team started their 2023 season with a trip to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders and battled their way to a 22-10 win.
"We are really pleased with earning a bonus point win to start the season." said Mustangs Head Coach Josh Campbell "We have been working hard over the last two weeks in preparation for the season opener and we saw a lot of really good things during the game."
Four Mustangs scored tries in the win, Katie Salverda, Kennedy Johnstone, Amy Wynne, and Reilly Cattell. Selena Hough would add a conversion in the win.
While the coaches were pleased with the win they still see some key areas for improvement.
"On a positive note, 8 new players pulled on the purple W for the first time and all made valuable contributions to the win," said Campbell "Our squad has significant depth this season and there is going to be real competition for starting spots week to week. We are going to take things one game at a time."
That positive momentum is being felt throughout the roster.
"Great first game out! Amazing starting point to the season and so many bright spots." said captain Katie Salverda "It's only up from here".
Western is back on the road next Saturday afternoon when they take on the York Lions. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
