Western Mustangs Shine on the International Stage at 2025 FISU Summer Games

London, ON - Many Western Mustangs student-athletes are representing Canada on the international stage this summer at the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games, starting this week and taking place July 16–27 in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany.
 
The FISU Summer World University Games is one of the largest summer multisport events worldwide and take place every two years in various cities around the world. The 32nd FISU Summer World University Games features eighteen (18) sports:
  • 3x3 Basketball (including 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball), Basketball, Badminton, Beach Volleyball, Archery, Fencing, Artistic Gymnastics, Judo, Athletics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rowing, Swimming, Taekwondo, Tennis, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo, and Diving.
The Canadian delegation is anticipated to be composed of approximately 340 members (240 student-athletes and 100 support staff). Student-athletes must meet specific eligibility criteria to participate, and coaching staff must satisfy the Team Canada FISU World University Games Coaching Certification Policy.
 
The Western delegation includes 18 athletes and 2 staff. 
 
Shona Branton, a fourth-year Social Sciences student and Western Female Athlete of the Year in 2023 and 2024, will compete in swimming at FISU, continuing her standout performances in the pool.
 
In rowing, Olivia Calbeck, a third year Science student, has been selected to represent Western and Canada in the Coxless Four event, building on the Mustangs' long-standing tradition of rowing excellence on the water.
 
In badminton, Jasper Tang, faculty of Social Science and co-head coach of the Mustangs Badminton team, will represent Western and Canada in the M Doubles and Mixed Doubles. 
 
Table tennis sees two Mustangs representing Western and Canada  – Nicole Cai, Faculty of Arts & Humanities and co-head coach of the Mustangs Table Tennis team, who will compete in the Women's Team, Singles, and Doubles; and Terrence Yeung, Medical Sciences and former Mustangs Table Tennis team member (2022-23) who will compete in the Men's Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. 
 
In addition, a notable twelve exceptional Western Mustangs will represent Canada in track & field at FISU this summer, alongside recently retired Mustangs Track & Field Head coach Vickie Croley, who joins the FISU T&F staff for these games. In addition, Danielle Kelton a Sports Medicine Fellow from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, will be a part of the FISU Mission Staff.
