London, ON - The Western Mustangs Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 8 are Jonelle Clarke (Wrestling), Lukas Geske (Wrestling), Men's Squash & Women's Squash teams.
It was such a successful weekend we had to expand our recognitions.
Geske capped off an incredible OUA career by winning his fifth straight OUA title at 82kg—becoming only the second Mustang wrestler ever to achieve this milestone, and the first in program history to win five titles in a row. This victory also completes an undefeated OUA season for Lukas and was a major contributor to the Mustangs' 2nd-place team finish. Lukas dominated the field, winning all of his matches by technical superiority (a margin of more than 10 points), while giving up only two points throughout the entire tournament.
Clarke won the OUA title at 65kg this past Saturday with a flawless and dominant performance. She won all three of her matches without giving up a single point, showcasing complete control in every bout. Jonelle earned two victories by technical superiority and one by pin, and in a true display of dominance, she defeated all of her opponents in the first round. Her gold-medal finish was instrumental in leading the Mustangs Women's team to a 2nd-place overall result at the OUA Championships. Clarke was also named the OUA Most Outstanding Women's Wrestler.
The Men's Squash dynasty remains alive after winning the OUA Men's Squash Championship for the 42nd season in a row this weekend. Western capped off another dominant season on Sunday, defeating Toronto 7-0 in the gold medal final to reclaim the OUA Championship banner and trophy. The Mustangs controlled the tournament from the opening matches, finishing atop the standings with a perfect 5-0 record while compiling a remarkable 34-1 individual match record. Western also posted a commanding 103-9 advantage in games and outscored opponents 1208-605, underscoring their consistency across the entire ladder.
The Women's Squash team won a second consecutive OUA Championship this weekend for the 16th time in program history. Western University completed a dominant weekend, defeating Queen's 6-1 in the gold medal match to secure the women's banner and finish the tournament undefeated. The Mustangs closed the championship with a perfect 5-0 record while pacing the field with 28 individual match victories, an 87-19 games record, and an impressive 1113-590 points differential.
Congratulations on your outstanding performances.
