Leddy nets double-double, but Lancers come back to defeat Western

LONDON, Ont. - The Windsor Lancers came from behind to defeat the Western Mustangs women's basketball team 85-75 at Alumni Hall on Jan. 20, with major contributions from a player who didn't play in the first half and a Windsor-born freshman.

Windsor, ranked No. 3 nationally, improves to 12-1 to remain in first place in the OUA West, while Western falls to 10-3 and remains in second spot in the OUA West.

With the win, the Lancers win the season series 2-0 by a combined score of 179-156. It was Western's first regular season home loss of the 2009-10 season.

Katelyn Leddy (London, Ont.) played a strong game for the Mustangs, leading her squad with 19 points,12 rebounds, two steals and one block. Amanda Anderson (Chatham, Ont.) added 16 points for Western.

Freshman Lancers guard Miah-Marie Langlois (Windsor, Ont.) had a terrific game for her team with 16 points and nine assists, while Jessica Clemencon (St. Rambert, France) led Windsor with a game-high 22 points, along with nine boards.

Bojana Kovacevic (Windsor, Ont.), who did not play in the opening half, added 13 points.

Western held the rebounding advantage, 35-28, including a 16-10 edge on the offensive glass.

Leddy scored the game's first points to give Western a 2-0 lead. Windsor was cold to start, with two misses on three-point attempts and a pair of sloppy turnovers.

Western built an early 6-0 lead and actually led by as much as eight in the game.

The Mustangs had a one-point, first-quarter lead of 19-18 and led 40-37 at the half. Western held their largest lead of eight points with 38 seconds left in the first half, but Windsor scored five points to pull within three before the break.

And despite foul and injury trouble for Windsor, the Lancers fought back. outscoring the Mustangs 30-16 in the third quarter. 

Jacklyn Selfe (Burlington, Ont.) finished with 11 points and four rebounds along with three assists and a steal in her Western debut.

Western had trouble controlling the round-ball, committing 24 turnovers in the game. The Lancers scored 26 points off turnovers and held a 24-18 lead on points in the paint.

A 12-3 Windsor run in the third quarter proved to be the turning point, giving them a seven-point cushion. Western tried valiantly to play catch-up, but were unable to take a sizable lead again.

Kovacevic came off the bench to score all her three points in the third quarter, despite playing through injury woes - she did not play in first half. She added four rebounds, an assist and a steal.

The Lancers led 67-56 after the third quarter and held on for the win.

Western travels to play at McMaster on Saturday Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. The Marauders are the only team to defeat first-place Windsor, doing so on Jan. 16 by a score of 66-50.

The next Mustangs home game is on Wednesday Jan. 27 when the Waterloo Warriors visit Alumni Hall at 6 p.m.
