TORONTO - The Western Mustangs men's soccer team surrendered three second-half goals in 15 minutes to drop their first game of the regular season, 3-2 against the York Lions.
Vince Caminitti scored both Mustangs goals in the first half.
Western falls to 10-1-3 on the season, one point behind York (11-2-1) in the OUA West standings. The Mustangs face Windsor (Oct. 20, 8:45 p.m., TD Waterhouse Stadium) and Brock (Oct. 23, 3:15 p.m., St. Catharines, Ont.) this week to close out the season.
The Mustangs scored early when midfielder Caminitti, who had missed several CIS games while participating at men's nationals with the London AEK squad, marked his return to action blasting the ball into the top corner off a York turnover 10 minutes into the contest.
The play developed on a great counterattack, and Caminitti's brilliant strike of the ball torpedoed into the top right corner past York goalkeeper Sotiri Varlokostas.
Andrew Murdoch made a great save off a Lions corner 18 minutes in, and minutes later Western looked to score again but Pat Mroczek put a redirect off a Caminitti free-kick just over the crossbar.
Caminitti continued his great play curving a free kick around the York wall with another great shot from 24 yards out to make it 2-0 Western in the 43rd minute.
Varlokostas goalie had trouble reading the shot
Despite trailing 2-0 at the halftime break, the Lions came out in the second half like a new team.
Murdoch was tested right away, making a save on a difficult shot early in the second half.
But eventually, York converted with three goals in 15 minutes showing great skill on the counterattack.
Striker Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) set up senior midfielder Dominic Antonini (Winnipeg), who was busy all game creating scoring chances from the wing. Antonini bent a shot past Murdoch which found the net just under the crossbar.
Selvin Lammie (Toronto) saved a ball from going out of play near the Western goal and made a great pass out front to Antonini who scored again to make it 2-0.
Freshman forward Alon Badat (Thornhill, Ont.) scored with a shot just inside right post to give the Lions the 3-2 lead.
Minutes after the Lions took the lead, play got heated.
Niko Mavrikos (Victoria, B.C.) and Branko Majstorovic (Mississauga, Ont.) got into a shoving match that resulted in Mavrikos throwing a punch and Lammie inserting himself into the scrum, choking Mavrikos in the process.
Both Mavrikos and Lammie were both ejected from the game with straight red cards, while Murdoch was assessed a yellow card while acting as captain and seeking an explanation on the calls.
Western struggled to gain any further momentum as York pulled back and played a 5-3-1 until the final whistle.
Varlokostas made two great saves to preserve the win, including one in injury time he stopped a redirected shot at point blank range.
