NORTH YORK, Ont. - Western scored on all five kicks from the penalty spot as the Western Mustangs edged the Ryerson Rams 3-2 in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) bronze-medal game at York Stadium on Sunday.
Daniel Frankel,
Pat Mroczek,
Daniel Baxa,
Andrew Walton and
Vince Caminiti scored from the spot, while
Andrew Murdoch forced one missed shot in Western's net, allowing three Ryerson goals in the kicks.
With the win, Western advances to the CIS national men's soccer championships in Toronto Nov. 11-14. The draw will be announced Monday with games beginning Thursday, with Western going in as the host seed (hosts Toronto will take an OUA champion or runner-up seed), facing the Canada West champion (UBC or Saskatchewan).
Ryerson's Markus Molder scored in the final seconds of overtime - controversially in the fifth minute of extra time when it originally was communicated there would only be two - to force penalty kicks after Western had built a 2-1 lead in the first overtime period.
Undisciplined play cost the Ryerson Rams in regulation as two men were sent off allowing Western to come back to score two goals and build a 2-1 lead.
The game went into extra time and Mroczek of St. Catharines, Ont., scored late in the first overtime period to give Western a 2-1 lead for the last-second Ryerson equalizer forced the kicks from the penalty spot.
The Mustangs dominated the possession through most of the game except for brief spurts of Ryerson offensive flair.
Early in the opening half, it was all Western, but Ryerson scored first off a giveaway.
In the opening minutes, Mustangs midfielder
Eric Amato was stopped by Ryerson goalkeeper Christian Maralado from just outside the box. Then a free kick from Caminiti and a threatening cross from Camillo Gonzales were cleared by Ryerson's defence.
Two other indirect free-kicks from outside the box in the first 10 minutes did not result in shots, as the Mustangs failed to connect on scoring opportunities early.
The Rams opened the scoring off a turnover deep in Western's territory, as Scotland's Kevin Souter struck the ball from 30 yards out past Mustangs netminder Murdoch 10 minutes in.
Murdoch made amends stopping Adrian Mancini four minutes later on a Ryerson counterattack and then Western went to work.
With several more chances for Western throughout the remainder of the first half, the Mustangs were struggling to finish.
Finally Western's relentless first-half pressure paid off.
Niko Mavrikos scored from a bad angle on the short side angling the ball into the near-side top corner past Maralado off a Mroczek through-ball with five minutes left in the first half to tie the game at 1-1.
A pair of late first-half corners in stoppage time in the first half from Alex Lewis and Caminiti resulted in nothing and the score remained tie at halftime.
In the second, Western came out with a purpose once again, keeping the Rams on their heels forcing counter-attack opportunities for their only offence.
Ryerson did have several brief runs of possession, but Western re-adjusted and held them off in a tactical chess match between the clubs.
Mancini picked up his second yellow card of the game, resulting in a red card, after tugging at Amato's jersey in the 59th minute, giving Western a man advantage.
Ryerson went on a quick forward rush, perhaps sensing they would have few opportunities in the offensive half of the field for the rest of the game, but dove on the rebound off the Ryerson shot.
Souter picked up Ryerson's second red card of the match after carelessly taking out Frankel with a rough tackle. Receiving his second yellow card of the game for the play, Souter was ejected and Western played the final 15 minutes of regulation play and the 30-minute overtime frame with an 11-on-9 advantage.
The teams entered overtime tied at 1-1.
Jason Morgan cleared the ball off the line off Western's second corner kick early in extra time preventing a Western goal. But the Mustangs kept the pressure on.
With Maralado coming off his line, Mroczek scored off a nifty feed from wing-back
Dominic Bell along the goal-line late in the first overtime to give Western the 2-1 lead.
Bell beat Maralado to the loose ball delivered into the area by Lewis and Mroczek redirected the through-ball with his foot, into the back of the net.
Murdoch stopped Vince D'Elia three times in the second overtime to preserve the lead, but a hand-ball in the closing seconds gave Ryerson a shot to tie it.
Alex Braletic's free kick from 30 yards out hit a few bodies and was initially stopped by Murdoch before Molder buried the rebound in the final seconds.
As soon as Western put the ball back in play, the referee blew the whistle forcing penalty kicks.
Western shot first and was perfect on their selection, while defender Michael Jan, Braletic and Molder scored for Ryerson. Morgan missed his shot, the third for Ryerson. With a 5-3 margin on the best-of-five kicks from the penalty spot, the Rams could not catch Western so their fifth shooter did not go to the spot.
