The Western Mustangs soccer squads took on Brock University this afternoon in St. Catharines and secured strong postseason placements with two road wins. The women capitalized with a 2-0 victory, and the men followed up edging the Badgers 1-0.
The women's game had a scoreless first half, and Brock keeper Luciana Di Paolo made a key save to keep the score even.
The teams regrouped over the halftime break and Mustang Lauren Winquist took quick advantage with her ninth goal of the season, less than a minute into the second half. Winquist is seventh overall in OUA scoring for the 14 games she started.
The Mustangs used the 1-0 lead for momentum and forced most of the second half to the Badgers' zone. Western received four corner kicks in the second half, and Jenna Schroeder took command and found the back of the net with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
Despite the Badgers' attempts, Mustang goalie Tori Edgar earned a shut out with two impressive saves in the second.
On the men's side, Pat Mroczek was the lone player to convert a scoring opportunity, part way into the second half. Mroczek received a yellow card to go with his goal on Badgers' keeper Jake Sweetzer.
Brock encountered some penalty trouble as well as both Josh Marinelli and Sammy Orlando also suffered yellow cards.
Mustang goalie Ivan Skoko earned his fifth shut out of the season and faced four shots.
With the win, the Mustags now sit in third in the OUA West rankings, behind York and McMaster with a 7-4-4 record. The women retain second spot, only one point behind first place Laurier.
The Mustangs regroup for home games tomorrow against McMaster Marauders, which marks their last home games of the regular season and sets the stage for an exciting playoff race. Game time is set for 1:00pm for women and 3:15pm for men at TD Waterhouse stadium.
