Mustangs edge Gryphons 1-0

Today, the Western Mustangs women's soccer team faced off against the Guelph Gryphons and came away victorious, 1-0.

At 16 minutes Sabrina DeNard challenged Guelph player Jennifer Dunn to a tackle, but was beaten which is rare for DeNard. Guelph forward Jennifer Dunn carried the ball on a slight breakaway and instead of taking a shot tried to cross to teammate Erica Bain, but Bain was unable to get to the ball before it went out.

Guelph created some opportunities for themselves and managed to fire off a few shots. However, this awarded Western keeper Keltie Brigham the opportunity to show off her dives and catches, the crowd saying “ooh” and “aah” as she singlehandedly wrangled the Gryphons.

At 35 minutes Guelph player Jennifer Dunn carried the ball up the right wing, crossed to the center, but Western keeper Brigham got to the ball before Guelph had any chance to score.

Just before the end of the first half, Western’s Jessica Couto took a corner kick, sending a high, lobbing ball into the center of the eighteen-yard box. Western’s Anna Keller was able to get a touch and score Western’s only goal of the game. The first half ended and Western led 1-0.

The second half had more good balls out of play than Bingo at a senior’s center. There were several impressive passes, a few great runs, but overall no one was able to get anywhere constructive. Turn after turn, ball after ball, challenge after challenge, the teams looked as though they were running keep away drills in a much larger eighteen yard box than usual, kicking the ball out when feeling pressured.

Much credence should be leant to Western player Jessica Trejo. Trejo’s throw-ins covered great distance and from the thirty-yard line she would seemingly able to hike the ball into the goalie box.

The score from the first half carried through and Western took the victory 1-0.

Next week the Women’s team will play the Brock Badgers at Western’s TD Waterhouse Stadium at 6pm on Wednesday September 26th.
