LONDON, Ont. - For the second time this season the Western Mustangs women's rugby team welcomed the Waterloo Warriors to Alumni Field, however this time it was the Mustangs coming out on top, defeating the Warriors 34-3 in an OUA quarter-final matchup to secure a place in next week's semi-finals.
"They played the game we knew they had in them. We took control and we played great," said Mustang head coach Natascha Wesch.
The first half of the match was stalled as one of the Warriors left the field with an injury but the Mustangs quickly gained momentum afterwards. Mustang rookie Breanne Nicholas, led the team scoring four tries and four conversions, with her first try nine minutes into the first half.
The Mustangs boldly battled against the Warriors sticking with the basics by combining speed, agility, and perseverance as the second half continued. The squad's defensive line impressed as they consistently drove their opponents to the opposite side of the field and secured their victory.
Western had impressive performances from several players including Tegan Williams and Danica Spencer who each scored a try for the Mustangs.
The purple and white will continue their playoff run into next weekend as they hit the road to play OUA semi-finals. The team will face Queen's on Saturday, October 19. Game time has yet to be determined.
