KINGSTON, Ont. - After a strong win over the Waterloo Warriors last week to earn a spot in the OUA semi-finals, the Western Mustangs women's rugby team's road to the provincial championships came to an end with a 30-15 loss to the Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon.
With momentum from last weekend's victory over the Warriors, the squad looked confident and played a great game for the loyal Mustangs fans who made the trip to Kingston. The Gaels produced a strong first half with Lauren McEwen scoring two penalty goals, a try and conversion for Queen's with no response on the board from the Mustangs.
Thirteen minutes into the second half the Mustangs came back as
Meaghann Buitinga posted Western's first try of the game. The fast-paced second half had both teams fighting for domination. Fourth-year
Lori Josephson provided two additional tries for the Mustangs but Queen's would keep the lead with a final score of 30-15 for the Gaels, securing them a spot in next weekend's OUA Championship.
Despite the loss it's been a strong season for the Mustangs, posting an overall 4-3 record and becoming the first Mustangs team since 2009 to advance to the semi-finals. They'll now take on the McMaster Marauders next Saturday for the OUA Bronze Medal.
