HAMILTON, Ont. – A strong second half helped the McMaster Marauders defeat the Western Mustangs women's rugby team 26-5 in the OUA Bronze Medal match on Saturday afternoon.
Â
After a tightly played first half that ended with a 7-0 McMaster lead, play opened up in the second half with the majority of the game's offence coming in the final 40 minutes. McMaster extended their lead with a try early in the second half before
Tegan Williams responded with a try at the 54 minute mark. Unfortunately for the Mustangs McMaster finished out the game's scoring with two tries and two conversions, all from Russell Division All-Star Cindy Nelles, to claim a 26-5 win.
Â
Despite the loss it was a strong season for the Mustangs as the team finished in second place in the Shiels Division with a 3-2 regular season record and advanced to the OUA Semi-Finals for the first time in five seasons. The purple and white also had four players (
Breanne Nicholas,
Lori Josephson,
Brandie Kirk, and
Danielle Spice) named to the Shiels Division All-Star Team, and Breanne Nicholas became the second consecutive Mustangs player to take home Rookie of the Year honours for the Shiels Division.
