WATERLOO, Ont. – For the second consecutive season the Western Mustangs women's rugby team knocked the Waterloo Warriors out of the playoffs with a dominant 39-0 win in an OUA quarterfinal matchup on Saturday afternoon at CIF Field.
Â
Western will now move on to the semi-finals to take on the McMaster Marauders next week.
Â
The Mustangs started off the scoreboard with a try twenty minutes into the first half, and followed up with a second try ten minutes later. Western didn't stop there, maintaining their momentum and scoring an additional two tries within the last five minutes of the half, to send the Mustangs into the halftime break with a 20-0 lead.
Â
Unwilling to allow the Warriors a comeback, the purple and white defence prevented Waterloo from breaking on to the scoreboard throughout the duration of the game. Meanwhile, the Mustang offence continued to impress, pushing through the Warriors to add an additional three tries and two converts, bringing the final score to 39-0.
Â
Leading the Mustangs score sheet was third year Health Sciences student
Andrea Bowra contributing 14 of Western's points with two tries and two conversion kicks, while
Nikki Case scored two tries for Western.
Nicola Woelfle,
Mackenzie Fane, and
Tegan Williams rounded out the Mustangs scorers, each contributing a tie in the win.
Â
Western will now turn their attention to the McMaster Marauders for their semi-final showdown next weekend. It will be the second consecutive season that the two sides have met in post-season play, with the Marauders taking last year's contest in the OUA Bronze Medal game by a 26-5 score.Â
