KINGSTON, Ont. – A strong first half helped the Queen's Gaels hand the Western Mustangs women's rugby team a 50-19 loss on Saturday evening at Nixon Field.
Â
With the loss the Mustangs finish the regular season with a 2-3 record, and will await the results of Sunday's Laurier-Waterloo matchup to determine where they finish in the Shiels Division standings.
Â
Playing under the lights at Nixon Field, the host Gaels opened the scoring early, recording their first try five minutes into the game from Sydney Nolan. Lauren McEwen recorded the first of five converts following Nolan's try to give the home side an early 7-0 lead.
Â
The Gaels would go on to score the next 17 points before Western's
Andrea Bowra put the Mustangs on the board with their first try at the 26 minute mark.
Breanne Nicholas added the convert to cut the Gaels lead to 24-7.
Â
However the Gaels increased their lead to 29-7 just before the end of the first half to send the team into the halftime break with a 22-point lead.
Â
Queen's maintained that momentum in the second half, recording three tries and three conversions to take a 50-7 lead. Western responded with an offensive flurry late in the game with a pair of tries from
Lori Josephson and
Nikki Case along with a conversion from Bowra, however it wouldn't be enough as the Gaels claimed a 50-19 victory.
