Box Score WATERLOO, Ont. — Goalkeeper Ben Cowman turned in his third straight clean sheet and Christian Douglas provided all the offence the Mustangs would need, registering a goal in each half to push Western to a 2-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night.
The victory gives Western three straight to kick off the season— marking the team's best start since they won six straight to start the year in 2010. That year, the Mustangs would finish with an impressive 15-3-4 record and win OUA Bronze, earning a trip to the CIS nationals.
There's no promise that Western will do the same this year but a 3-0-0 start to the season is certainly a good sign.
So too is the strong production that Western has seen from Douglas so far this season, as the third-year striker has been lights out in his first three games. With two more goals tonight, Douglas now has six on the season— good enough for tops not only on Western 's roster but in the CIS as a whole.
In total, Douglas fired six shots at the net on Wednesday— five of which were on target. The rest of the Mustangs chimed in with ten more shots on goal to give them 15 in total.
On the other side of the pitch, Western also made sure Cowman wasn't kept too busy, limiting the Warriors to four shot-attempts and just two shots on goal. In his first three games, Cowman has only been forced to make four saves in total, although he has been on his game when needed and can always be heard giving direction from the back end.
With their trio of wins in hand, the Mustangs will return home to take on Laurier on Saturday before heading back out on the road to visit Brock on Sunday in St. Catherines. Game time on Saturday is set for 4:15 p.m. at TD Stadium as the Mustangs will take on the Golden Hawks as part of Western's Orientation Week festivities.
