HAMILTON, Ont. – In a repeat of the 2014 semi-final game, the Mustangs were unable to take down the McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium. The 7-51 loss puts the Mustangs in position to take OUA bronze for the second year in a row, while McMaster will move on to the gold medal match.
Nikki Case led the Mustangs in scoring, with five points from the only purple and white try of the night. Also putting up points for Western was
Andrea Bowra, whose convert brought Western to the seven-point mark.
McMaster's Cindy Nelles and Ashley Gordon share the top spot on the Marauder end, each recording 15 points from three tries.
The Marauders were first up on the scoreboard, landing two tries in quick succession. Struggling against a high wind, neither convert found its mark.
Case responded to the ten point deficit by putting up Westerns first and only try of the night, followed up by a complimentary convert from Bowra soaring directly through the uprights. However, Western struggled to get back into the in-goal area after earning their first try.
The only points to go up in the remaining minutes of the first half were scored in the purple and white end, with McMaster pushing through the Mustang line to bring the score to 7-20.
Returning to active play after the close of the first half, the Marauders continued to control the game.
McMaster remained to dominate the scoresheet, with an additional 31 points added before the final whistle. On the Mustang end, the sheet was untouched.
The Mustangs now move to the bronze medal game on October 31, where they'll face off against Queen's for the second year in a row.
