WATERLOO, Ont. – The Mustangs opened up their season on a high note, defeating the Warriors 52-5 at Warrior Field on September 12 in front of stands packed with black and gold fans. The game, part of Waterloo's annual Black and Gold day to introduce first year students to varsity events, featured both a pregame and halftime show.
Â
In addition to opening the season for both teams, the 47-point purple and white win also gave fans their first opportunity to see how the team has come together under interim head coach Katie Baer.
Â
Freshman Veronica Herrigan topped the score-sheet, landing three tries for 15 points. Closely behind was Andrea Bowra, who landed four converts as well as a single try for 13 points.
Â
The only other Mustangs recording more than one try was Nicola Case, who added 10 points to the scoreboard. Also putting up points for Western was Danielle Spice and Paige Farries, who each recorded one try, and Charlotte Dunn, who landed two converts.
Â
The first forty minutes of play breezed by for the Mustangs, who recorded 38 points while preventing the Warriors from landing a single try. The second half wasn't as easy, the Warriors tightened up defensive holes to prevent Western from running away with the game.
Â
However, Waterloo's adjustments weren't enough to reverse their fortune, as Western managed to record 14 more points before the final whistle while allowing only one black and gold try from sophomore Courtney Munro.
Â
The Mustangs now look to September 19 for their next game, when they travel to Guelph to see how Western stacks up against the Gryphons. Scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., the game is sure to be a thriller. With last season's one-point loss to the eventual OUA silver medal Gryphons, the Mustangs will be looking for vengeance. Â
