Philadelphia, PA - The Mustangs were crowned NCAA Division 1 Doubles Champions this past weekend at the 2023 U.S Intercollegiate Doubles Championships in Philadelphia.

"This is the first time we've entered a double team so we weren't too sure what to expect. Griffin and Dylan have played a lot of doubles as juniors so I thought they had a chance to do well." said Mustangs Men's Squash Head Coach Chris Hanebury "There were some tough teams, most specifically from Navy where they have a 4 wall glass doubles court. They've won this title multiple times the past decade, so I knew they were going to be a challenge."

The Mustangs team made up of Dylan Deverill and Griffin Manley started things off on Friday against Fordham, where they won the match in three games with scores of 11-1, 11-2, 11-2.

The Round of 16 took place on Saturday, as the pair took on a side from the University of Rochester. The 'Stangs took the opening game 11-8, before dropping the second 12-10. Western then took the next two 11-5 and 11-0 to secure the win 3-1 and book a quarterfinal place against Brown.

A win against Brown later in the day booked the purple and white a spot in the semi's. Deverill and Manley topped Brown with 11-7, 11-0 and 11-5 game wins in the match.

On Sunday, Western dropped the opening game in the semi-finals 11-9 to Naval Academy. The Mustangs then took the next three 11-3, 11-9, and 11-9 to secure the win and their spot in the finals.

The championship match saw Western take on another Naval Academy side, which they also beat with 11-1, 11-9 and 12-10 game wins for a 3-0 final score.

"This is our first US championship title in many decades (I believe in the 80's) so it's a big boost for our program." said Hanebury

Also this weekend, senior and captain Elliott Hunt played on the individual draw. He won his first 2 matches 3-2 and then lost to a top player from Harvard 3-1. This was his 50th match in the US representing Western and finished his career with a 66% winning percentage.

Congratulations Mustangs!
