Toronto, ON - Western wrestling traveled to York on Saturday and won the combined team title. The strong showing was powered by four individual gold medals, 2 for the women and 2 for the men.
The men's team, led by Lukas Geske and Treye Trotman, placed first. Lukas picked up the gold medal in the 82 kg division, winning all three matches and giving up only one point. Treye brought home the gold in the 57kg class for the second weekend in a row. Treye won all four of his matches by technical superiority. Trotman scored 41 and gave up 0. Gavin Eldridge and Mark Summers picked up silver medals, Eldridge at 68kg and Summers at 100 kilograms. Two Mustangs brought home bronze medals, Charlie Ortencio competing at 72kg and Aanu Osunade at 125 kilograms.
The women place 3
rd as a team. The women's team was led by veterans Kendall Dettloff and Jonelle Clarke. Kendall picked up her second gold of the season by placing first in the 56kg weight class. Dettloff won her semi-final match by pin before securing a win by technical superiority, 10-0, in the final. Clarke also picked up her second gold of the season by winning all three of her matches on Saturday. Other medals for the women include two bronze medals, by Cyenna Trotman (50kg) and Isata Mansaray (68kg).
"The senior athletes on our team (Treye, Kendall, Lukas, Jonelle, Gavin) had great performances this weekend. They are excellent role models for our large and promising rookie group this year, paving the way for their growth and success in this sport through their hard work and attitude on and off the mat. Every tournament, we are seeing improvements in the athlete's performance, and we are excited about the rest of the season ahead" noted assistant coach Madi Parks.
The Mustangs have a weekend off before a busy weekend on November 30
th and December 1
st. The Mustangs will compete at the U of T Open on November 30
th before hosting the Western High School Invitational on Sunday, December 1
st, at Alumni Hall. The High School tournament attracts over 350 high school wrestlers from Southwestern Ontario and Toronto.
