Hamilton, ON - The Mustang wrestling team traveled to McMaster on Sunday, to compete in the season's first tournament.
There was a large contingency of first-year wrestlers, with most veterans taking the weekend off, especially on the men's team.
"It was a great opportunity for our newer members to get on the mat in a competition setting and get a feel for University wrestling, which is a much higher level than most of them have been exposed to before," said Mustangs Head Coach Scott Proctor
The women's team had a strong showing, placing third overall in the team standings.
Kendall Dettloff and Jonelle Clarke lead the way for the women's team. The co-captains both picked up gold medals. Kendall, wrestling in the 56kg division, went 2-0 (win-losses) on the day. Kendall won both matches by technical superiority, outscoring her opponents 20-0. Jonelle won both of her matches by pin. Jonelle was competing at 65kg.
"Jonelle and Kendall had impressive tournaments, both dominating their opponents on the way to the gold. It was a nice way for them to start the season," said Proctor.
First-year wrestler Chayton Valleau had an impressive showing on the men's side, picking up three wins and earning a silver medal. Chayton won two matches by pin and one 10-0.
"Overall, it was a good tournament for us. Several of our rookies got an opportunity to get some experience, and everyone comes back from the tournament with some technical things to work on".
Next up for the Mustang is the Pat Bolger Open hosted by TMU on Sunday, November 10 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m.
