Guelph, ON - The Mustangs wrestling team traveled to Guelph on Sunday to compete in the Guelph Open, a domestic carding tournament that saw wrestlers from across Canada and the USA. The Mustangs placed second in the overall combined team standings, showcasing their strength and determination.

The Mustangs collected five individual medals, including two gold medal performances from Treye Trotman and Kendall Dettloff. Trotman continued his undefeated season, going 3-0 on the day. He won his first two matches 11-0 and 14-3 before pinning his American opponent in the final. This marks Trotman's fifth gold medal in as many tournaments this season.

Zachary Ortencio and Patrick Salvador Guzman also brought home individual medals for the Mustangs. Ortencio placed second in the 70kg division, securing three impressive wins, including a last-second takedown in his semi-final to advance to the final. Patrick Salvador Guzman won a bronze medal at 79kg, picking up two wins before losing to the eventual champion in the semi-finals. He regrouped to win two more matches and claim the bronze.

"The men wrestled extremely well today," noted head coach Scott Proctor. "Patrick and Zach both had tremendous performances and beat wrestlers they had previously lost to. They showed great heart in tough matches and found ways to come out on top. It is a positive sign as we enter our final preparation stage before the OUA Championships."

The women's team also had a strong showing, led by Kendall Dettloff's gold medal win at 55kg. Dettloff picked up three wins on her way to the gold, including two by pin and one by technical superiority against her American opponent. Jonelle Clarke earned a bronze medal in the 65kg division, winning her first match by technical superiority before falling in the semi-finals. Clarke bounced back to win two more matches and claim the bronze.

"The women wrestled well today," Proctor added. "Jonelle and Kendall both look strong as we head into the final two weeks before our OUA Championships. Some of our women got some tough matches in and learned some important lessons that we can work on as we prepare for the championships."

Next up for the Mustangs is their home tournament in Alumni Hall gym  on Sunday January 26. Wrestling starts at 9:00 a.m.
