London, ON - The Mustangs wrestling team emerged victorious at the annual Western Open wrestling tournament held on Sunday at Alumni Hall. Western won the combined team standings. The Mustangs' Women's team clinched first place, while the Men's team secured an impressive second place in their respective divisions.
The Women's team showcased remarkable talent, spearheaded by three outstanding gold medalists. First-year wrestler Cyenna Trotman demonstrated exceptional prowess, winning all three of her matches by pin to claim the top spot. Kendall Dettloff delivered a flawless performance, triumphing in both of her matches with a combined score of 21-0. Jonelle Clarke captured the third gold for the Women's team with an 11-0 technical superiority win and another by pin.
Adding to the team's success, Rachelle Mao, Myah Kyle, and Paige Baynham each secured silver medals, further exemplifying the depth of talent on the squad.
The Men's team also shone brightly, bringing home three silver medals courtesy of Callan Beggs, Thomas Fortier, and Mark Summers. Jack Gelians rounded out the medal haul with a bronze.
Head Coach Scott Proctor praised his athletes for their efforts, highlighting the importance of the tournament as preparation for the upcoming OUA championships. "This was a good final tournament for us before the OUA championships," Proctor noted. "A number of our athletes got an opportunity to get some final matches before the championships. We have identified some areas where we need to improve which we will work on leading up to the championships. We are confident our team will be ready to go."
Next up for the Mustangs is the highly anticipated OUA championships, set to take place on February 8th at Algoma University.
