Sault Ste Marie, ON - The Western Mustangs wrestling team delivered an outstanding performance at the 2025 OUA Wrestling Championships this weekend. The Mustangs showcased their prowess on the mat, bringing home an impressive haul of 11 individual medals, securing second place overall in both the men's and women's divisions and winning 3 major awards.
The Mustangs demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, earning medals in various weight classes, including five gold medals from Treye Trotman, Gavin Eldridge, Lukas Geske, Kendall Dettloff and Isata Mansary.
Treye won his third consecutive gold medal. Trotman dominated his way to victory by winning all three matches by technical superiority and outscoring his opponents 33-1.

Gavin Eldridge made a significant impact, winning gold by securing four matches by technical superiority and one by pin. This is Gavin's first OUA championship, and he was named Outstanding OUA Male Wrestler. "Being able to win a gold medal at OUAs and represent Western while doing it is an amazing feeling especially since the past three years I have come up short of being able to stand on top of the podium." said Eldridge "Winning gold just this year shows how much has been put in to reach this goal. Being able to share the feeling of winning gold with teammates just makes it that much better, and bringing home a second place team finish sharing that feeling with the team is what it is all about."
Lukas Geske continued his remarkable streak by securing his fourth straight OUA gold medal. Geske won all four matches by technical superiority, outscoring his opponents 46-2, placing him in an elite group of wrestlers. " 82kg was a very deep weight class with lots of talent," said Geske "I'm very proud to be able to bring another gold back to London . It would not have been possible without my coaches and training partner's."
Kendall Dettloff earned her first OUA gold by pinning all three of her opponents. "Winning my first OUA gold is an incredible feeling. It's been a long journey, and I'm just really grateful for the support from my coaches, teammates, and everyone who has helped me get to this point," said Dettloff "This one feels incredibly special. After battling through injury, overcoming the setbacks of a concussion, and having to rebuild both physically and mentally, standing on top of the podium is proof of my resilience and the work I've put in,"
Rounding out the gold medalists was first-year wrestler Isata Mansary who won gold by winning all four of her matches. Isata was also named the OUA Female Rookie of the Year. "This was my first time competing at a tournament this big. The intensity was really high but it was really comforting to be surrounded by my teammates and coaches!" said Mansary "Winning gold means so much to me! I tore my ACL in first year and have had 2 knee surgeries since so having the opportunity to not only train and compete, but win, means the world to me!"

The Mustangs' success extended beyond these individual champions, with Jonelle Clarke, Paige Baynham, Zach Ortencio, and Mark Summers all winning silver medals. Bronze medals were awarded to Patrick Salvador Guzman and Myah Kyle.

Mark Summers was also recognized as the Male Student-Athlete Community Service Award winner, highlighting his contributions both on and off the mat.
Western qualified 19 wrestlers for the U SPORTSÂ Championships, scheduled to take place from February 28 to March 1 at Brock University. Head coach Scott Proctor expressed his pride in the team's performance, stating, "It was an impressive showing by our teams. Every wrestler gave their best effort and left it all out on the mat. OU's is a very emotional tournament; you feel so happy for the wrestlers who achieved their goals, and at the same time, your heart breaks for those who didn't reach their goal because you know how hard they have worked and the effort they have put in. You wish they all could win, but that is sport."
Proctor highlighted several special performances, noting, "It was exciting to see Gavin win an OUA title after being so close the past few years. Lukas joins a special group of four-time winners, displaying tremendous mental toughness to accomplish this goal. Treye continues to display what an elite-level wrestler he is. Kendall has worked hard for this moment, and it was great to celebrate it with her. Isata has worked very hard to get where she is today, recovering from multiple surgeries, so for her to not only win but be recognized as Female Rookie of the Year is great. The coaching staff is proud of how hard the entire team has worked, and we are excited to see what great things they can accomplish at U SPORTS."
The U SPORTS Championship is the next stop for the Mustangs from Feb. 28 - Mar. 1 at Brock.
