GUELPH, ONT - Western will be well represented at the upcoming FISU World University Wrestling Championships, hosted in Çorum, Turkey, after strong performances at the FISU trials from Caleb Rutner and former Mustang Steven Takahashi.

Rutner, a student at King's College, deffeated top competitors in the 70kg class in order to advance. He breezed through the initial round besting Brock Munro 13-2, before taking on Kyle Horvath in the final.  The Winnipeg native cemented his spot in Turkey with a step-over counter in the ground position to successfully pin Horvath.

Takahashi, who graduated from Western in 2015 as a multi-time CIS All-Canadian and winner of the prestigious Dr. Claude Brown Trophy, also secured a spot in the FISU Championships. The preliminary round saw him take on Sam Jagas and come out with an 11-1 victory. In his final round, Takahashi triumphed over Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club's Darth Capallan at 15-3 by Technical Superiority.

Madi Parks also competed in the FISU Qualifying tournament, but split her contests 1-1, while incoming athlete Brayden Ambo was eliminated after the initial round.
